College of Business Committee on Inclusion Hosts Immigrants in the Workplace Event

October 26, 2017

The College of Business Committee on Inclusion continued to promote diversity and inclusion with their second event, Conversation on Inclusion: Immigrants in the Workplace on September 13, 2017.

Dr. Catherine S. Browers, Committee Chair, discussed the origin of this year’s topic by saying, “The committee was inspired by President Eisler’s support for the international student community, and their important contribution to our campus and society. We were convinced that a forum to showcase successful immigrant entrepreneurs’ experiences offered a unique opportunity for students to invest in their understanding of a diverse post-graduate world.”

This year’s speakers all came from Michigan, and they shared their journey to this country by telling their individual stories of success and determination.

  • Born in Indonesia, Bing Goei immigrated with his family first to the Netherlands before settling in Michigan at age 11. He is the CEO of Eastern Floral Company, as well as the Director for the Michigan Office of New Americans.
  • Raquel Salas, from the Dominican Republic, is one of the founding partners of Avanti Law Group, LLC. She has devoted her career to the representation of small businesses and advocates for the minority business community on a state and national level.
  • Dr. Shri Thanedar emigrated from India.  He has owned several businesses, including his most recent venture, Avomeen Analytical Services. He recently announced his candidacy for Governor for the state of Michigan.

Speakers responded to questions from participants regarding personal experiences and concerns about immigration and inclusion.  Student responses from the event included statements like, “The speakers were phenomenal,” and “This is an event that I would attend again.”  The Conversation on Inclusion attracted approximately 275 students, administrators, faculty, and other guests.

Dr. Browers said, “The enthusiastic response we have received has been overwhelming, and we are grateful to our speakers and guests for making this a great event. The committee is already sharing ideas for 2018.”
