Graphic Design Students Travel to 2015 DesignThinkers Conference
December 2, 2015
The Graphic Design program at Ferris State University recently traveled to the 16th annual DesignThinkers Conference in Toronto, Ontario. The conference was held by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD), and is Canada’s largest conference for visual communicators. The purpose of the conference is to inform designers on creative, forward thinking techniques by discussing industry trends. Numerous visionaries spoke to students and professionals about a range of communications-related disciplines.
“I learned that the speakers had a lot in common. [The speakers] either had something they were passionate about and built their careers on, or they started out small… This showed that you’re not going to get where you want to be right out of school. But if you’re passionate about something, you can do beautiful, magical things with it,” said Andrea Cordes, a junior in the graphic design program in regards to her conference experience.
Students heard from industry professionals that have worked for Buzzfeed, Nike, New York Times, Microsoft, Facebook and Starbucks.
Additionally, students were able to explore design studios and startups in Toronto to witness the industry’s creative atmosphere.
“It was reassuring to see the processes we use in school are the same in a design studio. It makes me excited to graduate and to start applying everything I have learned at school to a career [that] I am passionate about,” said senior design student Kaila Parent.
