Professional activities and areas of interest
Dr. Woolen’s 34 years of experience in the IT industry include leadership positions (CIO, Associate VP, Executive Director, Director, Associate Director, Supervisor) and applications development positions (systems analyst, programmer, etc.). In addition to his duties as Associate Dean, Dr. Woolen also serves as the ACBSP accreditation co-champion for the College of Business, and the college’s assessment facilitator/coordinator.
Dr. Woolen taught traditional classroom courses in programming languages (COBOL, BASIC), introduction to IT for non-IS majors, and computer concepts. He taught the Ferris freshman seminar (FSUS 100) for seven years. He also taught on-line courses in project management.
As a past member (2003-19) of the Certification Council for the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP), Dr. Woolen helped design and update national certification exams for computer professionals. The ICCP is acknowledged throughout the information and communications technology sectors as the most authoritative source of professional certification.
Dr. Woolen was selected by the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to serve as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner for five years (2009-13). For three years, he served as a Senior Examiner for the Michigan Quality Council.
Dr. Woolen was awarded senior member status by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in 2010. As one of ACM’s prestigious Advanced Member Grades, ACM Senior Member status recognizes the top 25% of ACM Professional Members for their demonstrated excellence in the computing field. ACM, with over 100,000 members in more than 100 countries, is the world’s largest education and scientific computing society.
Dr. Woolen is active in the Big Rapids community. He served for a decade (2004-14) as a member of the Board of Directors for Crossroads Charter Academy (CCA). Dr. Woolen served as president of CCA for 7 years (2007-14). He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Big Rapids (2008-09) and current president (2020-21) of that service organization. He served several years as a board member for Recycle of Mecosta. He served as a board member of the Mecosta County Development Corporation (MCDC) for ten years. Dr. Woolen served as chair of the Ordinance/Policy Review Committee for the Big Rapids Township for several years.
