Graphic Design Seniors Re-Brand Hope House, A Free Medical Clinic

April 12, 2018

Hope House, a free medical clinic in Big Rapids, received a makeover from Rachel VanAken and Carlie Vanklompenberg, two seniors in the Graphic Design program at Ferris State University.

Hope House focuses on helping uninsured community members get free medical care. The clinic runs solely on volunteers including spiritual guides, nurses, doctors, and more. Over the last 11 years, they have helped hundreds of patients for free.

Hope House originally approached the Graphic Design program at Ferris State University looking for a website, but left with a complete re-brand and new visual identity. In the Design Project Center (DPC), the College of Business design studio, the designers are taught to take a step back and look at the big picture. Based on their findings, VanAken and Vanklompenberg made recommendations to Hope House that exceeded their expectations.

“The student designers were professional, and worked to understand our clinic and its mission and culture, integrating that information into three cohesive presentations from which we selected the one that best matched our identity,” said Dr. Thomas Wright, a founding board member of Hope House. “They kept us informed at every step of the process. We are very pleased with the service that DPC provided and would not hesitate to recommend them to other businesses or agencies in need of media or marketing assistance. In fact, we have already.”

During their time in the DPC, students dive into their projects and research their clients to ensure the best possible solution. Empathetic design is taught in the Graphic Design program at Ferris State University and shines through in the Hope House branding.

“I couldn’t be more delighted with the experience of working with the DPC team,” said Carol Wilson-Jungck, a dedicated volunteer of Hope House. “They have been extremely professional, treating us with the utmost respect. They have provided us with a wonderful, updated website and the information to maintain it ourselves, as well as a new ‘look’ for our clinic, including logo, brochure, and other products to aid us in our work as a volunteer organization. We greatly appreciate all of their efforts and look forward to the launch of the new ‘face’ of our clinic! Working with the students and their advisors showed us how valuable their program is, not only to the students involved, but to the many organizations that have benefited from their expertise. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude!”
