Senior Risk Management & Insurance student, Noah Gale on internship with Meijer.

Students Develop Professional Experience Through Meijer Internships

Meijer is a family-owned company that started out as a single grocery store in Greenville, Michigan. Today, Meijer is made up of over 220 stores and 65,000 team members. In order to create a smooth experience for all customers and employees at all of their locations, Meijer must rely on a team of behind the scenes business professionals. This summer, two College of Business students had the privilege of stepping into this group as summer interns.

One of these students was Noah Gale, a senior in the Risk Management and Insurance program. As a risk management specialist, Gale’s role was to review and address customer claims for incidents that have occurred within the stores. This involved contacting customers directly and gathering evidence, such as video statements. Professionals in this capacity allow businesses to lessen the probability of future incidents and continue to provide high quality service, even through the unavoidable mishaps of life.

Gale became interested in spending the summer at Meijer after speaking with Paul Kwant, the College of Business Internship Coordinator. Kwant made suggestions for Gale, who ultimately applied to Meijer and was chosen for the position.

“I never had an internship before,” said Gale, “it has opened me up to more experience which will hopefully help me obtain a job.”

The second College of Business student at Meijer this summer was Mitchell Suam, a Senior in the Computer Information Technology program. Unlike Gale, Saum worked in a group setting and spent the majority of his time assisting other Meijer team members, rather than customers.

One of the major projects Saum’s team worked on this summer involved setting up each corporate employee at Meijer with a new Apple iPad.  Having the most up to date technology allows for Meijer to maintain a high level of security and increase productivity.

Saum’s suggestion to fellow students seeking out internships is, “Don’t give up when you don’t land an internship with the first couple companies, keep applying.”
