PGA Golf Management Major Interns in Arizona as Retail Coordinator

Senior PGA Golf Management major, Ben Poppy just returned from interning in Marana, Arizona for seven month in the golf shop at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain.

“My overall goal for my internship was to have myself gain knowledge and experience I need to become a well rounded golf professional, as this would help me in my career,” said Poppy.

Poppy’s main duties involved working within retail operations, but after about three months he had the opportunity to take over as Retail Coordinator for the shop. He worked everyday with inventory: receiving information for the database, unpacking merchandise, and meeting with vendors to view new products for future lines.

The additional responsibility that Poppy received as the Retail Coordinator was one of his favorite parts, “I had to step up and assume a position slightly out of my comfort zone but I felt I did a good job and received a very favorable internship evaluation from the employer. That really helped me gain confidence in what I was doing, and has set me up with the confidence to succeed in the future.”

Poppy believes that his Marketing and Finance classes were a key part in his internship’s success. The instruction he received in both classes was helpful for understanding sales statistics, equipment pricing, and profit formula used.

Poppy was also able to help the club host the World Golf Championship: Accenture Match Play Championship Feb. 19 – 23, which is a unique professional tournament at the course. He is one of many PGAGM majors around the country putting the skills to great use!
