Flexibility In The Workplace: Stacy Veldheer’s Internship at Family Futures

When Ferris State University Marketing senior Stacy Veldheer got her internship at Family Futures in Grand Rapids MI, she thought she knew what to expect.

When Veldheer started at her internship, she was contributing her insights on social media and content creation.

“My role here has shifted a little bit. When I first started, my job was mainly focused on the social media aspect,” said Veldheer, “Now I do a lot of making graphics for other departments here.”

One of the most interesting aspects of Veldheer’s internship was working with people who are not in her field. This gave her more opportunity to show off her skills and knowledge of marketing. Working with people from other fields also creates a diverse set of ideas and can lead to more opportunities for everyone to learn.

It’s pretty significant to see the things you’re doing are actually working.

As part of her internship, Veldheer worked on a donor reengagement campaign. She constructed emails to send to donors, created a mailing letter, and designed stickers to send to donors as a thank you for their support. Since Veldheer began the campaign, Family Futures has seen an increase in donors who have not participated in the organization since 2016-2017.

Veldheer said, “It’s pretty significant to see the things you’re doing are actually working.”

Veldheer’s advice for students is to start looking for an internship early. She was a junior when she began looking for an internship, so she felt more pressure to take the first one offered to her. If she would have started looking her sophomore year, she could have done more than one and could have catered an internship to her interests.
