USTA “Careers Beyond the Court” Shares Successes of Ferris Alumni

June 14, 2017

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Discovery Education published four new “Careers Beyond the Court” profiles about Ferris Professional Tennis Management (PTM) alumni who have become a successful part of the Tennis industry.

The profiles consist of a short summary of each professional’s life and a 2–3 page interview in which they tell their story and give advice for students interested in becoming a PTM professional. Each career is an example of the variety of employment opportunities within the Tennis industry.

This year’s new additions to the Careers Beyond the Court page include Ed Tseng, Christin Thurston, Ian Westermann, and Joel Disbro.

  • Ed Tseng (‘97) is an author, speaker, and performance consultant in Princeton, NJ.
  • Christin Thurston (‘98) is an Elite Professional/Life Time Fitness for USTPA in Robbinsdale, MN.
  • Ian Westermann (‘04) is the Head Pro at Essential Tennis LLC in Milwaukee, WI.
  • Joel Disbro (‘05) is the Lead Racquet Technician/Tour Equipment for Wilson Sporting Goods in Chicago, IL.

In his career profile, Ian Westerman said this about his decision to study PTM at Ferris: “When I was 15 or 16, my coach showed me an article about a professional tennis management [program] in Michigan. The idea of being around tennis and on a court daily, and making a living from it, sounded like utopia. I didn’t even apply anywhere else—I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Last year, alumni Anne Smudz (‘14), Newlyn Wing (‘14), and David Ramos (‘04) were featured on the page. Their career profiles also included videos showcasing their careers.

The full career profiles for all seven alumni, as well as the three videos, can be found at the Careers Beyond the Court Educator Resources Page.
